locally, we have worked for Mr. james at various instances which made the
offer acceptable for us. We shall charge $350 to Salem MA.

We hope to be able to conclude with this soonest. I shall inform my
colleagues we’ve been in touch so we can start making preparations. Please
make sure you send correct details including your preferred date and time

Mar, I really wish i could help in any way but my team wont agree
coming that far without you given any form of commitment. If you’ve
worked with movers before and they didn’t ask for a down payment then
that means it has to be a delivery within the city and not state to
state,

We are willing to have the Piano delivered to you as instructed but
you know we will have to run some expenses on the road so thats why we
will need a down payment Ma.

We hope you can understand better now and make the payment OR you can
as well get a truck that will help you come get the piano from us here
if that will be okay with you. But i bet you cant see any local mover
that will charge that cheap that we have done for you Ma.
we are ready to deliver to you and soon as youre ready to comply.

Hi John,

Please provide more details so I can complete this transaction. Since I have never conducted such a transaction, please be patient as you will need to assist me with more information.

All movers I have dealt with were able to tell me the name of their moving company – talk with me over the telephone – let me speak with someone in their office who handled the transactions. No movers ever requested money transfers via a “Walmart” as they were able to handle that through their office.

Where are you located? What is the name of the moving company? What is the name of the warehouse? I will need this information in order to pay you.

Please forward Mr. Brad’s (the owner of the piano) telephone number. So far, I have not been able to talk with anyone by phone and that is very unusual.

In a previous email, you stated: “We hope you can understand better now and make the payment OR you can as well get a truck that will help you come get the piano from us here
if that will be okay with you. But i bet you cant see any local mover that will charge that cheap that we have done for you Ma. we are ready to deliver to you and soon as youre ready to comply. That is certainly an option — If you can provide the information, I could pay for another mover.

Sincerely,

Mary

I was contacted by John Pires on where to send my money. I offered him $400
on delivery, but he said he wanted $200 sent to
    Joann Payne
    {deleted – likely an innocent victim}

I asked him for a contact number and address and got no response.
I then called information on Joann Payne and got the phone number of
    xxx-xxx-xxxx
Joann Payne did answer and either acted like she did not know anything
about John Pires, or she did know him and was afriad of getting cought
    in the scam.

Charles, thank for posting. It appears to me that a criminal is using the name of an innocent victim to obtain his funds. That’s why I obfuscated the phone number and address.

Thanks for posting this. You just saved me $350 on this same scam. I’ve corresponded with a “James” whose email was wanda.antoine@yahoo.com about a piano that was meant to be for his now-deceased grandson. He said he could have it shipped to me for $350, and gave me the email and phone number for the “movers”: 480-4091562 & johnppires01@gmail.com. I was a bit suspicious about how cheap the piano was, and with a simple Google search found this, so thanks.

Thanks for this – they are using phone number (920) 350-9591 and peterbrad05@blumail.org

The story we got is that they were moving from Spokane to Salt Lake, and the movers accidentally loaded the piano. We needed to pay them to come drop it off … $350. It was pretty obviously a scam.

Thanks folks, you just saved my daughter the $100 down payment to the movers. John has now changed his name to Joe Whithaker (jowhithaker@gmail.com), and the point of contact for the wire transfer is now Rosemarie Paxton whose account number at Bank of America is 488030361629 (ACH 026009593), but the phone number is still the same 920-350-9591. Thanks again. How many Yamaha A1’s do you suppose get moved by accident anyway?

They almost got me with the same scam. They said they were moving to iowa, and would deliver it to me for $350. They said all the same things to me, and the number they gave me is a google account number. the number they gave me is 2404275173, and the email that they have been using was johnhudson2015@gmail.com, and danielmc001@bluemail.org. Lucky i just happened to try to look up a name online.

    Good Evening Hugh,

Following our short conversation via text message, my phone has a flat battery and I have to return to Milton, PA to retrieve its charger.

I head a private group of 4 movers and we will be coming straight to Shakopee, MN tomorrow morning. We have set a scheduled time when we should move at 12.00pm as I expect you to have sent funds before then. We will complete the trip in two days and may need a third day to make home delivery should we arrive in MN late on the second day. We will be responsible for carrying the piano into the house in its provided area and also joining and setting its legs.

I will not be able to take payment through credit card, so please make it payable through Bank of America tomorrow morning to:

    Bank of America

    Account name: Rosemarie Paxton
    account number: 488030361629
    routing number: 026009593

I’ll be looking to receive your response in mail or a call/text once this is through.
thanks for the opportunity to work for you.

    regards,
Rosie and rest of the Crew

Hey all Rosemarie Paxton is doing the same scam in Victoria Australia, this time asking $400.00 AU for the Baby Grand. Initially it is free to a good home but upon inquiry she has moved to Brisbane for cancer treatment and the piano was mistakenly moved up there but for the cost of bringing it back you can still have it.
Amazing that she (?) still uses the same name for the same scan. Not very creative.

    This from a scammer:

Hi, I’m sorry for not writing you back prior to your interest in collecting my baby grand piano which I’m still offering to give out.The piano is still available but it is no longer locally, so if you’re still willing to have it I am able to help you through with arrangements to have it returned to Melbourne.

I have stayed in Melbourne for years but have been doing temporary relocation from and to Brisbane for medical treatment and finally decided to relocate permanently to get consistent medical care and attention. I have two pianos, one a grand piano and the other a baby grand piano. I am actually giving out the Baby Grand and selling the Grand. Both are Yamaha.

There was a little mistake made my the movers I employed to relocate the remaining properties I had in Melbourne. I made an arrangement for them to keep the Baby Grand in a storage facility in Melbourne and bring the Grand to Brisbane, so it could be easily discharged should an offer come for it to be collected following my Ad. Unfortunately they stored the Grand and are currently routing to Brisbane with the Baby Grand. I will be arranging to dispose off the Grand Piano through the storage facility but you may have to make new arrangements to have the piano returned and delivered back to you in Melbourne. This of course will mean you will have to commit some funds to charges.

Already I have discussed with the movers about this and they are able to return to Brisbane once they deliver the rest of the properties here. They would be here tomorrow unfailingly and if you’re still keen you can speak with them directly for schedule and arrangements. They have agreed to do it for a smaller fee than what they would charge for the delivery. So you can budget around $400.

Its a little investment thats worth it. The piano is in good shape no cracks nor damages/fault whatsoever. In fact it was recently tuned, as I invited someone to tune both pianos as parts of preparation to put the Grand Piano in good shape for sale. I will be handing them some papers to show proof and have prepared a written bill of sale to come together.

I’ve attached a picture of the piano so you can have a small view of what you’re expecting in terms of looks and size. Its a Yamaha C3 Baby Grand.

I hope i’m not having to inconvenience you with this. I am sorry if I am, but if you do want this I believe its worth the hassle.

    Cheers,
    Rosie

    Kylie,

I admire your attitude! I hear from quite a few victims, and many of them try to “beat themselves up” over the crime. You were smart to use Paypal. I assume you did some arm-twisting to convince the criminal to use Paypal. Most scammers will not touch Paypal at all. I hope that recovery goes well.

    Stay in touch,

Damn I wish I’d found this before I handed over my $420.. (she’s upping the price, it seems). I feel very silly and gullable. So they obviously haven’t been caught – I have no way of seeing my money again?
What action has been taken to pursue this scam so far?

  15. Chief said, on June 30, 2011 at 7:57 am

    Tess,
No need to beat yourself up over this — these guys are professional liars and have no limits to the depth of the untruths they will use to extract money from our wallets. I am sorry these crooks took your money.

You can attempt to contact the fraud line at the money transfer service you used, but the scammer has probably already picked up his money. I also suggest reporting it to http://ic3.gov — even though the crime is outside of the U.S.

  16. Qumulys said, on July 3, 2011 at 8:23 pm

And, STILL the same scammer is at work!
I’ve put up notices about them on Gumtree, only myself to be told off by Gumtree saying its against their ‘terms and conditions’ !! You would think they could say thankyou for pointing it out. But no, they STILL are letting the same or very similar ad go through! Its ridiculous!
The message and name has changed slightly, but the scam is still essentially the same, here is the updated scammers email.

I have stayed in Melbourne for years but have been doing temporary relocation from and to Brisbane for medical treatment and finally decided to relocate permanently to get consistent medical care and attention. The piano belonged to my wife and since her demise it had never been used but rather abandoned in the basement. Thanks for posting. I was looking online for a piano I thought was local and saw your site. And did not pursue any further

This was in the seattle craigslist also by rosemarie paxton.

    Hello,

I placed my late husbands Yamaha G2 baby grand piano for free a couple of days ago. I am sure you must have been looking for my response to your interest and I apologize for not getting back to you. from the look of things i think my mind goes with yours cause i desire to give it up to you and i pray you give the piano the same value my late husband gave it while he was alive.

There was a mistake in relocation of the properties as i have instructed the movers to clear the apartment and the baby grand piano was packed with the rest of the properties to be delivered to my new home here in Brooklyn NYC. I cannot put the blame directly on the movers as I may also be at fault in giving them adequate description on which of the pianos they were supposed to bring/leave, because I was also arranging to dispose the bigger (grand) piano, but wanted it sold here in NYC. So they are now on the verge of delivering the baby grand piano here tomorrow morning while I now plan to arrange for sale of the Grand piano to someone from here.

I am very embarrassed about the situation and I know this wont be great news for you also. But if it will help in any way I have hinted the movers about having to return the piano to Seattle for a little fee, due to the misrepresentation of message passed across we have both agreed at a very reasonable amount to get the piano back to Seattle. i will get a correct fee when the movers arrive here by tomorrowevening or midnight today.

Please do let me know if you can come up with the fee to arrange the delivery, I am much willing to part with the piano and its in a good condition. So I’ll implore you to try to sort the delivery as its an item that has still a lots to offer. If you think you cannot make up for the delivery kindly let me know so i make an alternative plan.

I have attached a picture for sight seeing. the baby grand measures 4’5″ deep x 4’7″ wide x 4’4″ tall when open .It has no cracks nor damages and was tuned and partly furnished recently, alongside the Grand piano, in efforts to prepare it for sale. I will look to read from you again later tonight.

    kind regards,
