Hello,

My 2004 Acura TL Navigation is in great shape. This car has never had any accident. It was always garaged and never smoked in. Never been damaged. It has no scratches, dents or something like that. No mechanical or electrical problems, no accidents. Clean title in hand. It does not need anything additional to function, has only 66,570 miles. The VIN# 19UUA66274A046453. I work in the army and i got divorced so i don’t need the car anymore because it was my wife’s car.I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and inspect it (for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me, this way we are both protected.

The last price is 2900$.
Here are more pictures: http://tinypic.com/a/23zfp/3

Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name(first middle and last name) and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction, payment and shipping details from them.

Thank you and have a nice day,

I was scammed by this guy. Is there anyway of tracking him down.

  2. Chief said, on July 16, 2010 at 10:53 am

I fear the chances are nil. See the FAQ’s on this site. I encourage you to report the theft per instructions there. That is the only glimmer of hope I have seen, and that only protects some future innocent buyers from being ripped off.

How did you get ripped off by this guy?

Sally, feel free to browse the site — specifically the FAQ’s which are linked in the right hand column of the homepage.

    Yomon,

You just got the word out by posting here. Feel free to add another comment with the scammers’ names and email addresses. That’s how most potential victims find our information.

    Thanks for contributing,

    Hi again,

The car I want to sell was my ex wife’s car and I do not need it anymore. After I finished my divorce, I sealed the car in a military warehouse in Salem/Oregon. The car is ready for shipping anytime by plane by US Military Air Cargo, so it will cost me nothing. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area. A truck service I have arranged will deliver it to your place. Shipping is making door-to-door, to your exact location, so you will not have to pick up the car yourself.
The price for the car is $2,900 USD. This price includes all the shipping taxes and fees. eBay will hold the funds until you receive and accept the car. I will have access to funds ONLY after you test and inspect the car (you will have 10 days to do that) and in case something goes wrong or the car is not as advertised, you will receive the ensured amount of the transaction from the seller’s purchase protection account. Anyway, I am sure if you will not be satisfied about the car, I will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back. eBay will guarantee for that. From the moment the payment is secured by eBay, the shipping process will begin and it will arrive at your address in about 3 max. 4 business days. You will also receive all the documents including the titles and a Bill of Sale. I have insured the cargo, so if something damages the car during the shipping, eBay will refund you also from my seller’s account purchase protection.

    Here are more pictures: http://tinypic.com/a/23zfp/3

Please reply with your full name and address. After that, I will be able to start the process with eBay. You will receive all the transaction details from them.

I had a buyer but he was not serious, so yes the car is still for sale!!!

He appeared again this week on our local craigslist as daniel.slavin33@googlemail.com selling a 2006 ACURA TL w/ NAVI must sell!! – $2902. Not too original! Here’s his reply to my inquiry:

Hello, I’m writing you regarding my Chevrolet Impala LS, it is a 2005 model in perfect condition and currently has 74,000 miles. The price is $2700. I have to tell you that I left the car in Montana at the shipping company because I’m currently at work, I’m a casino dealer on a cruise ship. Regarding the transaction, I will use Google Checkout program. If you are interested this is how it works: You send me your full name, shipping address and your phone number so I can open a transaction with Google Checkout, they will contact you with an invoice regarding our transaction. You will send the payment to Google Checkout and they will notify me to ship the vehicle to your location once the funds are in their possession. You will have 5 days inspection period, after you will inspect and test drive the vehicle, you will have to decide if you want to keep it or not. If you will keep it, Google Checkout will forward the payment to me and the deal is done, if not you will get a full refund from them and the car will be shipped back on my expense. Basically Google Checkout will secure the funds until you receive and inspect the car. This way you will be able to inspect the vehicle before I receive any money from you and I know that you have the money and you are not just fooling around, hope you understand me. Waiting for your reply.

    Thank you,
    Daniel

Rec’d the below response just this morning for Craigs list posting http://houston.craigslist.org/ctd/2081972437.html

    Hello,
Thank you for your interest in buying my car. Let me tell you a few words about the car. It’s a 2004 Acura TL Navigation, in perfect condition, with no need for additional repairs, no scratches, dings, special marks whatsoever, never been involved in any accidents. The interior looks great (NO SMOKING). It has 72,500 miles . It has a clear title ready to be signed and notarized on your name. The price is not negotiable , $2,340.00 is my last price.I sell the car at this price because I cannot enjoy it due to my job(I work as a dealer on a cruise ship) and I’m a single woman and I have nobody close who can use it.
All documents, including owner’s manual, clear title and a bill of sale on your name will be provided along with the car. Also about payment and shipping I will use only eBay vehicle protection program so we can both be protected.I just need your full name and address so i can open a case.(with no further obligation or fees).

I went back to Craig’s list to report a scam (ID#2082954349) on the above 2004 Acura and can’t find where to report it??????

  12. Chief said, on November 29, 2010 at 4:17 pm

    Dana,

Craigslist does not care. The best you can do is to flag the ad as spam. Also, feel free to post any of the details here so other potential victims can discover the information here before parting with their money.

You’re right, Chief! I’ve reported this scammer 3 times and Craigslist has done nothing! I hope other potential victims have the smarts to do a little investigating a too-good-to-be-true deal before they’re had.

    Hi Chief,
(and everyone else who has posted on these persons who are obviously trying to run a scam. Probably another thing that might be able to be done is a report to Ebay, who takes scamming seriously. Since these guys are trying to use the Ebay system, they obviously have an ebay ID to receive the funds to. If anyone has an ebay ID from these individuals, i would encourage you to report them to ebay’s Trust and Safety Dept.
I found this guy on Craigslist yesterday here in Toledo,Oh listing an Acura TL Navigation 2006. Price was way too good to be true, at $2900. First flag. Seller sent me the infamous emails listed above, requesting payment thru Ebay. Second Flag. Third Email came explaining he was divorced, and had his wife’s car sealed in an Army Warehouse in Salem, Oregon. Third Flag. I did CARFAX the VIN # given to me in the first email, and it came back as a car leased in Rhode Island to an owner in Florida. The pics of the vehicle were pics taken in Florida, and its my guess they stole pics from people listing their vehicles in other media like local online news media sites, etc.
My husband and I realized from email #1 that this was a scam, so there is no way we would send money off to someone only to be ripped off. Its most likely a Nigerian group who is scamming. I have had Nigerian scammers try to scam me 5 yrs ago, and they are all over the internet at auction sites, and media sites such as Craigslist.
Good luck to all! Report it to the police if you sent money, report the VIN# you were given as well, and if you were given an Ebay ID to send money to, report that to Ebay.
    Blessings.

The same person, or a copycat has popped up on the Pensacola, FL craigslist. When inquiring about the car, you get the same ‘form’ letter response:

    Hello,

This 2004 Acura TL NAVIGATION with 28,100 miles, has no leaks or drips and it has never been smoked in. This car has been extremely well maintained with a full service history.I am the second owner of this car.I bought it when I was serving in Fort Belvoir, U.S. Army base near Bethesda, MD and is slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions with a clear title free of encumbrances and liens.I have dropped my price to $2,900.00 since I need to sell it before March 15th,when I will be deployed in Afghanistan with my platoon replacing the troops schedule to come home.If you’re interested to conclude this purchase in a timely manner email me your; FULL NAME and SHIPPING ADDRESS & PHONE NUMBER to open a case with eBay’s Buyer Protection Program and they will contact you to explain the entire procedure. The financial part will be managed by them, which means that you will have a 7 days inspection period before committing to buy the car. In this way both, buyer and seller are 100% covered during the steps of this transaction.

Hope to hear from you soon,
    Corporal Brianna N Evans

the IP addy for this, according to the source in gmail, it was sent from qmta02.westchester.pa.mail.comcast.net with the account of briannanevans@comcast.net. I don’t know if that’s worth anything, but I just hope more don’t fall to this scam like I might have had I not been a bit paranoid.

Jason, I appreciate your submission. I suggest reporting it via http://ic3.gov — even though you were not defrauded. It help law enforcement aggregate cases against such criminals.

Done and done, complaint filed in the hopes that it helps others avoid the scam. Also dropped an email to comcast about the scam, considering the person was using a comcast email account.

  18. Chief said, on March 1, 2011 at 11:11 pm

Thank you for being a trooper, Jason. If comcast replies with a scripted email, reply back that you want a supervisor to review it. The helpdesk at most tech companies is taught to just send the script. Let them know you want a bit more. 😉

    Hello Chief and Jason,

I had the same person pop up on the Tippecanoe County Craigslist which in in Lafayette Indiana with basically the same story, Only this time it was a 2005 Honda Accord Hybrid with 79,397k miles on it for $2500.00. They also said they were serving in Fort Belvoir, U.S Army Base near Bethesda, MD. Same exact story about the car being 100 percent working and excellent condition. They said they were the 2nd owner of this car and needed to sell it before March 22, 2011 because they were getting deployed to Afghanistan and to send full information and then I would be dealing with eBay’s Buyer Protection Plan. Thankfully I had told my older brother about this and he did the researching for me, and sure enough a SCAM. I am so thankful I didnt send any money through Western Union like they told me to. Thank you so much for the information about scammers. Greatly Appreciated. JUST MAKE TO SURE RESEARCH BEFORE FOLLOWING THROUGH WITH ANYTHING LIKE THIS…..

This has popped up recently in Southern Maryland. Didn’t think something was right about it so I ran a google search on the name and found all of you who have had similar ads. Just thought I would post what I found too.

    Hello again,

Please take a few moments and read my email carefully. I know it is long, but I will explain all the details about the car and the transaction. At the moment I’m stationed at United Kingdom.Making final preparations before deploying to Afghanistan with the U.S. Convoy. The car is already at our Military Logistic Department form Fort Belvoir, U.S. Army base near Bethesda, MD, crated and ready to go. The Logistic Department will deliver the car to your home. The shipping is free for you. Since the car is in a military base, with no access you can not go there and take it, only the Logistic Department can deliver it, because the car is in their custody.Shipping may take anywhere between 2 to 4 business days depending on the destination. All documents you need for ownership, manuals and bill of sale will be provided along with the car.For the payment I would like to use eBay as a third party. They will keep your money into a protection account until you get the car and will release it to me after inspection period is over and you agree to keep the car. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the car before committing to buy and to eliminate any concerns you will have 7 days to inspect the car. If you decide not to keep it eBay will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for both of us. I’ll start the official procedure, and eBay will contact you about this. If you are interested in buying it just mail me back with:
    – Your Full Name – Required by eBay (You’ll receive important guidelines + instructions from them.)
    – Your Shipping Address and PHONE NUMBER – Required by the Logistic Department (They will call you with delivery/pickup instructions 1 day ahead so you can communicate what time
schedule work best for your to receive the car)
Again I want to point out that because I am going to Afghanistan this sale is my top priority and I am looking after a fast transaction, with no delays. That is why I decided to lower the price, to avoid wasting time with negotiations and find a buyer as soon as possible.

Here you can find more pictures with the car: http://2005hondaaccordhybrid.myphotoalbum.com/slideshow.php?set_albumName=album01

Thanks, hope to do business with you soon!
