Scammer selling vehicle advertised on Craigslist from coast to coast in the US.  Content of a typical ad:

2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS LIKE NEW – $3990

VEHICLE COMES WITH THE REMAINDER OF THE HYUNDAI FACTORY WARRANTY

CAR HAS: Air Conditioning,Satelite Radio, AM/FM Stereo – CD, Power Steering, Power Brakes, Power Door Locks, Power Windows, Radial Tires, Trip Odometer

100% SCAM – Do not send any money to this guy.  Never ever send money via Western Union or Moneygram to someone you do not know personally.

I received this email from the scammer:

Hi,

Thank you for being interested in buying my 2009 Hyundai Sonata GLS, 8,842 miles , Transmission: Automatic, VIN: 5NPET46C69H538014.

It is in EXCELLENT condition; the body and paint are great, no scratches and no dents; the interior is clean; it has never been involved in an accident; comes with all the documents needed for registration and clear title.

My final price on it is US $3,990. It is priced to sell fast !

My husband died one month ago and I decided to move closer to my parents(they are very old) in Canada and the car is here with me. As I am unable to travel in the near future and having no one to help me with the sale I decided to make this transaction through eBay. I believe this protects both buyer and seller and it’s the right way to do this.

So don’t get me wrong and don’t take it personally but I would prefer to secure the deal through eBay. Also because the car will be shipped from Canada to US I prefer to work with a third party in order to keep the both of us safe in this deal. I will be assured you will buy the car and you will be assured that you will receive it! Basically the money will be sent to them and they will keep the money until you receive the car and only after you inspect and drive it they will forward the money to me.

If you have other questions feel free to email.

Thank you!
Michelle Brewer

A second email from the scammer:

Hello again,

The car is still registered in US. If we reach an agreement, I am willing to take care of the shipping to your address as the vehicle is already at the shipping company in Quebec ready to go anywhere in the United States. Also the car has a clear title and it is free of any lien/loan.

The sale will be managed by eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program for our own protection as they act as a neutral third part.

eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program will keep the money until you inspect/drive the vehicle.

This is how the Vehicle Purchase Protection Program works:

1. I will contact eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection Program and give all the info about this deal.
2. They will email us the forms which are needed for our deal.
3. You will send the payment to eBay and they will notify me to ship the vehicle to your location.
4. After you will inspect/drive the vehicle and decide to keep it, eBay will forward me the funds and the deal is done.

Remember you have 3 days to test it. If by any reason the vehicle is not as described or if you find any problems with it I will pay for the returning fees. I’m sure it won’t be the case because it’s a state of art looking and working vehicle. I apologize if it seems like I’m pushing on this deal but I really want to be sure everything is clarified before any further steps.

If you are interested please let me know your shipping details(name and address) so I can open a transaction case.

Looking forward to hear from you!
Michelle

Hi,
If you want to find out more details or wish to move forward with this deal please send me your full name and shipping address so I can open a case with ebay and declare you as buyer. Thanks for posting this. This person is listing a 2007 Mitsubishi Raider LS Automatic Fuel type: Gasoline-$3400 (Laurel). When I requested more info, I received a set of emails IDENTICAL to the 3 shown on this post, right down to the dead husband and the very old parents in Canada. What a joke!

Mary Beth, thanks for commenting. However, the story is not funny to those who have been burned. These criminals are claiming many victims. 😦 Chief

    Hi,
Thank you for your interest in my 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe LT (45,600 miles). Is in absolutely perfect condition and well maintained, no damage, never involved in accidents and has a clear title, no liens. I sell it at this price ($3,800) because I just finished the divorce with my husband. When the divorce was finished I owned this car. I have some financial problems right now so I want to sell it asap and a fast sale can be done only at a low price. Unfortunately for me my daughter is in hospital and I can’t do this transaction personally, the transaction will be made through eBay protection program for the safety of both of us. The total price is $3,800 and it includes delivery to your address. If you want to buy it I just need your full name and address so I can open a case. You must know that eBay will contact you without any obligation to buy it or fees.

I just got divorced and I decided to move closer to my parents. Right now I’m located in Florida and the car is in New York where I use to live. The car will be shipped from NY on my expenses. It was awarded to me in our divorce. Being a single mother and not having a driver’s license i decided to sell the car. As I’m unable to travel in the near future and I don’t have anyone to help me with the sale I decided to make this transaction through eBay.You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it(for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected.I believe this protects both buyer and seller and it’s the right way to do this. From the moment the payment is secured by eBay the shipping process will begin and it will arrive at your address in about 3 max. 4 working days.
The final price is $2,800 including shipping and delivery to your home address. If you agree with these terms and you have the money, send me your full name and the address where you want the car to be delivered and I will initiate the transaction with eBay. You will receive all the transaction details from them.
I will appreciate an answer as soon as possible. Also, feel free to ask me any question you may have.
    Thank you,

    Respectfully,
    Jessica Cervantes

Sabrina, thanks for posting the text. I hope you are baiting the scammer safely. If you do not know what that means, just ask. If you’ll forward a copy of the scammer’s email (with headers) to abuse[at]photobucket.com, they’ll inactivate the album. Sure, the scammer will create another one, but it will keep him occupied with activities other than corresponding with potential victims.

e-mail to us regarding our interest in the car:

I received your inquiry regarding my car.The car is in excellent condition! There are absolutely no problem with it whatsoever. I am the original owner and I have the service books. Clear Title.I’m selling it because I’m divorcing and the car is mine, registered under my name, but I don’t drive it, only my ex-husband used it, so I don’t need it anymore.I’m now back to my family in London UK and I hope to recover emotionally ASAP and start it all over. If you want to buy the car we can conduct the transaction under the protection of Google so we can both be protected. The car is still registered in the US so it’s very easy to register it under your own name. In case you decide to buy, I will cover the shipping costs. You can register with google checkout at https://checkout.google.comHow it works:1. Buyer deposits with Google Checkout.2. Sellers ships the vehicle to the buyer.3. Google pays the seller only after buyer confirms that the vehicle has been received and inspected. If you don’t like car after you receive it, you can simply cancel the transaction and get a full refund, and the car will be sent back to me(at my expense). You will fist receive the car at your door, see it, touch it, drive it… and ONLY if you like you you purchase it, if not you just cancel the deal.Basically Google will keep the payment safe until you receive and inspect the car. There is no commitment. I am 100% sure that you will love this car because I know how much my ex husband loved it.If you agree with the arrangement send me your name and address and I will initiate the google transaction.Regards,Elena
