Craigslist Scammer – 2006 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SE – $2900

Posted in database, ebay spoof, scammer by Chief on April 7, 2010

Standard Craigslist scammer. The ad linked here looks as if an 8-yr-old designed it. Instead of emailing or calling the seller, he asks you to fill out a form linked at the bottom of the page. Clicking on the form leads you to, a free service which is regularly abused by criminals wishing to remain anonymous.

I filled out the form and instantly received an email from Bucharest Romania:

You have to know that the 2006 Nissan Maxima 3.5 SE I am selling is 100% working and great looking, no flaws or dents, no scratches or any kind of damage. The title is clear. It has 39,203 miles. .This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. No electrical problems on this beauty. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line.
Here are the pics of the car :

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and inspect it (for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you won`t be satisfied with the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back.
I am located in Madrid,Spain and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between our country and Spain. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because In order to be able to register this car here, I would have to pay very high import/custom taxes. My final price on it is $ 2900. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 4 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them.

Thank you and have a nice day,
Tech. Sgt. Rich Puckett

The next email I received was from his fake eBay account (click to view a bigger version):

The scammer continues to email me asking me to hurry. He tells me the VIN is 1N4BA41EX6C842610 . It seems the scammers have learned that putting the VIN in emails draws too much attention when those emails are posted in public. 😉 After a few exchanges, he sent me this:

eBay Motors Customer Support Message

Dear Victim
We have received your inquiry regarding the transaction you are currently involved in and we are happy to assist you.
We accept two types of payment for European transactions: bank wire transfer, only available for payments larger than US $5,000.00, and Western Union money transfer. The usual PayPal payment method, is out of discussion, because of our client military status, can`t withdraw checks or any kind of bank accounts. In order to complete Transaction # 2748229224 you have to pay with CASH at any Western Union Office, from your name and address as the Sender to eBay verified as the Receiver.agent name, Elita Land

We will use Western Union Wire Transfer, and after the process is complete we will chance the receiver,so the seller can withdraw the amount in cash. The eBay Motors Agent will secure the payment until the Buyer receives, inspects and accepts the vehicle. or, if it is the case, the Agent will refund the payment to the Buyer.
