We received these replies today from a scammer who advertised on Craigslist:

Hello and sorry for my delay, I’m Sgt Jason Paregon. The 2006 Toyota Corolla LE 1.8L 4-Cyl Automatic is in perfect working condition. This vehicle engine runs very, very smooth. No electrical problems on this beauty. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior looks like it just came off the assembly line. The car has 45225 miles.VIN Number: 2T1BR32E06C593141 * Chrome grille surround* Roof-mounted Euro-style fixed-mast center antenna* Color-keyed protective body-side moldings* Color-keyed door handles* Daytime running lights w/twilight sensor * Variable intermittent windshield wipers w/mist feature* Cloth 4-way adjustable front bucket seats* Driver seat height adjuster* 60/40 split fold-down rear seat* Covered center console w/storage * Tilt steering wheel* Anti-theft engine immobilizer * White instrumentation-inc: Optitron speedometer/tachometer, LCD odometer, dual tripmeters, temp/fuel gauge, outside temp gauge, tire pressure monitor Here are the pics of the car : http://s1009.photobucket.com/albums/af213/2006corolwe/ As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it(for 10 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. Anyway i am sure that if you will don`t be satisfied about the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back. I am located in London,United Kingdom and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between USA and United Kingdom. One months ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because we can’t register it here; it has US specs and everything, and registering it here in Europe will take for ever. My final price on it is US 2,960 $. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 3 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them. Best Regards, Jason and Maria Paregon SSgt, USAF1 SOMOS/MXOOA

And the second reply:

Hi again, !!! Also the car will arrive with all the documentation’s required for registration and the keys. I will send you all the papers and documents (clear title, bills of sale, car’s manual) to prove the ownership and to be able to register it with no problem. The clear title and the bill of sale will be both signed so you can become owner of the car on spot. We have a deal! I forwarded your information to eBay. They will shortly contact you with all the transaction details. Please follow their instructions exactly and make the payment. Immediately after they confirm me that they hold your payment, I will proceed with shipping the car to you. Thanks Hoping to hear from you soon

Thanks, Jon. If you would, please include the title of the Craigslist posting. You might be surprised how many of us take the title and conduct searches of Craigslist so we can flag the scammers’ ads. I flagged a couple dozen 2006 Accords just now based on your comment! Thanks again. — Chief

This is very amusing as from car shopping in the past, I can pretty much tell a cars reasonable price by make model year and mileage. I KNOW HONDAS!! LOL & this car’s kbb value for FL for private party in good condition, b/c no car that is used is in better condition than good- otherwise it would be a NEW car. 😉 anyways, its valued at over $14k!! A dead giveaway is when he was saying one wouldnt have to ship it back… that he could easily find another buyer in the area. Ha! And arent we ok with the U.K.? Why would a Sgt be handling a relations conflict anyway? Lol especially a “maintenance sgt” ..? Another scam giveaway. Ok im done

Chris, excellent observations. These criminals play on the gullibility of those looking for a deal that is “too good to be true.” I surmise that I would not be able to pull the wool over your eyes in any business transaction, and you appear to be a very savvy guy. On the other hand, honest folks who trust the written words of a vehicle seller are not necessarily stupid — just under-informed on the techniques of these scammers. I receive comments daily from folks that have been scammed, thus this site. My goal is to have this information pop up on a search engine if the potential buyer shows the least bit of curiosity regarding these “good deals.”

    Comprende?

Thanks for posting. We can use guys with your intuition if you care to join this battle. It’s not difficult nor expensive! — Chief
