Garden variety Craigslist scammer. Email below is from lt.joshkemble@gmail.com

Hello, You have to know that the 2006 Honda Accord EX-L I am selling is 100% working and great looking, no flaws or dents, no scratches or any kind of damage. The title is clear. It has 45,379 miles. The VIN# 1HGCM66886A046987. Here are the pics of the car : http://s797.photobucket.com/albums/yy259/honda_accord_exl/ As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and inspect it (for 5 days) eBay will release the payment to me; in this way we are both protected. I am located in Madrid,Spain and I was sent here to improve the military relationships between our country and Spain. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States because In order to be able to register this car here, I would have to pay very high import/custom taxes. My final price on it is $ 2900. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping. It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. You will get it to the nearest airport in your area and then it will be trucked forward to your place. You will receive the car in about 4 days. Please get back to me asap if you decide to buy, and include in your e-mail your full name and address where you want it shipped so I can start the deal with eBay. You will receive all the transaction payment and shipping details from them. Thank you and have a nice day, Lt. Josh Kemble

    Maressa,

I wish I could offer you a solid solution. If you have in fact lost money to a swindler, a wise move would be to contact law enforcement in your area. Depending upon the resources available to the department, you may or may not get any help. You can start with having hardcopies of emails — INCLUDING HEADERS — to expedite any potential research. If you do not know how to view headers, see this link, or do a google search with those terms. If the law enforcement officials seem receptive to your plight, feel free to have them view this site and drop me an email at q2fred@gmail.com.

Sorry I cannot offer you any more help than that. I attempt to thwart these criminals, but they are quite resourceful. 😦 — Chief

My husband and I were almost scammed by this same individual, I have photo’s of the vehicle and the Virginia Lic. Plate as well as the fake e-bay purchase transaction information I can forward you if it will help catch these types of people.

Samanthia, I appreciate your dropping me a comment. The sad news is that I know of no activity by law enforcement to apprehend such criminals. The scammers are not brilliant, but they are reasonably smart. My research tells me the typical scammer can live anywhere in the world. He uses email addresses such that his location is not easily found. He will typically have a “virtual” fax phone number in the southern California area. The resources required to research all that and then cross lines of jurisdiction to apprehend a “small-time” scammer is just not in vogue today. Yours and many of the comments I receive are encouraging me to leverage some of tools used by other industries — yours, for example (and thanks for the email) — to begin pinning these guys to specific locations.

Alas, the most critical step is finding individuals in law enforcement who will take the time to comprehend the scammers’ often-convoluted smokescreens and start nailing some of these guys. Again, your industry cooperates with guys like me. We need that from every corner of the globe to make a difference.

Thanks for taking the time to write and encourage me. — Chief

I have also been scammed by this no good person. I have started the steps in tryn to find an do something about this .It will take some time but im a business owner an will do what i have to to find and get the subject charged.I have some local law inforcement that is willing to spend some time on this.i really need the photos if i could get u send them to me ?I had but they got erased if u will send them i will give u my info an i will keep u posted thanks Robbie Buchanan

  6. Chief said, on January 13, 2010 at 9:47 pm

Robbie, as you find resources that will listen to you and move to respond, I would appreciate your sharing that with me — email is fine. Finding caring individuals within the law enforcement ranks is a key to launching the investigation. Good Luck.

I will search my email for photos, but in my opinion, the best solution is to see if any of your deleted emails are still in a “trash bin” or “trash folder” in your email client. A serious investigator will want the entire emails including headers. I know I have emails from “Kemble” and will freely share those with any interested party.

Hi chief much like all of you i came upon this individual in search of a low priced car and like Sara Ratchcliff he called his self Lt. Casey Nelson this time. This page helped alot in making sure i didnt get scammed by this person oh and like you i have also dicovered a scammer on craigslist the individual went by the name of “Christina Faris” selling a (2005 Acura TL at $2,970.00 ) her email reads…

First of all I want to thank you for your interest in my car. I sell it at this price ($2,970.00 ) because I have been divorced recently and I don’t have a driver license.
Now the car is in my property and as a woman I don’t need it. This car is in excellent working conditions, no scratches,
flaws or any kind of damage, slightly used in 100% working and looking conditions and comes with a clear title.
From the beginning you have to know that for the payment I request only secure pay, I prefer the payment to be done using eBay services.
We will use a safe payment method because I am affiliated at eBay and I have a purchase protection account for $20,000.00
The final price that I want for this car is $2,970.00 including shipping and handling.

If you are interested in buying it please provide me your full name and address so I can initiate the deal through eBay.

I will wait your answer very soon.

I later found another person who went by Rita Streep who was selling a (2005 Lexus IS 300 at $2,970.00 ) Check out that the year and price are exactly the same so i emailed her to investigate a possible scam and like i believed it was the same person her email read…

Yep. Saw the same deal, emailed, and got the same response. I was suspicious anyway just because the deal is too good. 50k mile Lexus for $3k anyone? It’s quite convincing, but I don’t know how they would pull it off. They specifically mention buyer protection, which is a real policy that eBay has. eBay protects you for I think $50k if the sale doesn’t go through successfully. Also I wonder what you’d find if you Carfaxed the VINs since Carfax does list when a vehicle is on sale.

  18. Chief said, on January 19, 2010 at 11:35 pm

Andrew, from what I have seen reported to us, the criminals usually have the Carfax data spot on. Just another detail they take care of to embellish their stories. The current scripts have been active for a few years. Our team is ready to react when new scripts are introduced.

Thanks for stopping by. — Chief

Thats great to hear that my post helped you avoid getting scammed Tom. You always have to do some investigating when something online seems to good too be true, thats what i did i asked alot of questions, looked up info on it and luckly i found out that indeed it was too good to be true and i was able to put this post up on Scammer Database to help out people like you who also came across that individuals ad and could have became the next victim of a scam . The price for the car is $2,900 USD. This price includes all the shipping taxes and fees. Ebay will hold the funds until you receive and accept the car.I will have access to the funds only after you test and inspect the car (you will have 5 days to do that) and in case something goes wrong or the car is not as advertised you will be fully refunded. Anyway i am sure if you will don`t be satisfied about the car i will surely find another buyer in your area and there will be no need for you to ship the car back. Ebay will guarantee for that. From the moment the payment is secured by eBay the shipping process will begin and it will arrive at your address in about 3 max. 4 business days. You will also receive all the documents including the titles and a Bill of Sale. The cargo is insured so if the car is damaged during the shipping you will also be refunded.
Please reply with your full name and address, and I will start the process with Ebay. You will receive all the transaction details from them.

Hoping to hear from you soon

Please follow their instructions exactly and make the payment. Immediately after they confirm me that they hold your payment,
I will proceed with shipping the car to you.
Also the car will arrive with all the documentation’s required for registration and the keys. I will send you all the papers and documents (clear title, bills of sale, car’s manual) to prove the ownership and to be able to register it with no problem. The clear title and the bill of sale will be both signed so you can become owner of the car on spot.

Thanks so much to everyone that has posted comments to this site!!!!!!!!!!!

Jamie – just tell the scammer you found a better deal and break off the communication. He’s probably scamming 2 or 3 dozen others and will drop you like a rock. He wants cash — not addresses.

I am glad you found the site; your thanks are the only form of payment we receive. : ) — Chief

My niece was just about to be potentially scammed by this same idiot. Same emails as above using the name Casey Nelson. All I did was google the VIN# and all of this information came up. It is a great service here that others can see something like this before they WESTERN UNION this idiot $2900. When it sounds too good to be true….it probably is. Why doesn’t EBAY take care of these criminals? It really gives EBAY a bad name!

Thanks for your comments. Your niece was lucky to have someone such as yourself to bounce this purchase off of. I’m thinking your nose probably would have sniffed this one out without us before the deal was closed — considering your line of work. 😉

Thank you SO much! I would also recommend people not to use their actual addresses in the future. If it’s done through eBay, how is he able to scam people? I’ve never used eBay.

Jay, thanks for you comments. See our posting at https://scammerdatabase.wordpress.com/2010/01/26/anatomy-of-an-ebay-spoof-site/ for a description of the way the criminals sell on “Ebay”. The vehicle exists — the scammer does not own it, though. He steals all the graphics off internet pages and concocts a story for his purposes of stealing your hard-earned cash.

If you are concerned that the scammer has your name and address, please do not be alarmed; he only wants your cash for the fraudulent sale he is conducting.

We were searching eBay and Craigslist for a used vehicle and saw the scam ad for the 2006 Honda Accord EX. We too received the convoluted reply from Lt Casey Nelson.

    Hmmm, smells bad I’m thinking…

First we checked the eBay Buyer Protection Program which specifically EXCLUDES anything listed on the “Motors” site including all motor vehicles. Not good.

Then a short ‘net search reveals he/she has sent many other scams are Lt Josh Kembel or Lt Casey Nelson or as Capt Daniel Robinson or as Rita?!? I thoguht this smelled foul!

Thumbs up to the interent scam buster community and those on this site, THANK YOU for your continued efforts to thwart these thieves.

I was a tad surprised to see sooooo many replies all in the past 10 days too. Keep up the good work.

He posted me the same exact note that all of you got about the 2006 Honda EX-L. He’s trying to get me to wire him (or her) the money right now through western union. So if anybody runs across the name “Lt. Casey Nelson” he’s a fraud.

Anyways, to anybody who encounters this punk don’t buy. In fact, I just wouldn’t purchase anything saying it’s going through ebay b/c this guy or girl can just change their name. AND THIS GOES OUT TO YOU “CASEY NELSON” I HONESTLY FEEL SORRY FOR YOUR MOTHER B/C NOBODY COULD BE HAPPY ABOUT RAISING A PERSON SUCH AS YOURSELF. You have to know that the 2006 Honda Accord EX-L I am selling is 100% working and great looking, no flaws or dents, no scratches or any kind of damage. The title is clear. It has 45,379 miles. The VIN# 1HGCM66886A046987.

As I know that my current situation is pretty special I want the deal closed only through eBay’s Buyer Protection Program in order for you to be 100% protected.

Thank you and have a nice day,
    Lt. John Colton

    Hello there,

Thank you for being interested in buying my 2007 Scion tC, 49,109 miles, automatic transmission, VIN: JTKDE177170187229.
The car It’s in perfect condition without any mechanical problems, with no damages or hidden defects,no need for additional repairs, clear title without any accidents, liens or loans.
My final price on it is US $3,200, shipping included. It is priced to sell fast !
I just got divorced and I decided to move closer to my parents. Right now I’m located in Canada and the car is here with me. The car was awarded to me in our divorce. Being a single mother and not having a driver’s license I decided to sell the car. As I’m unable to travel in the near future and I don’t have anyone to help me with the sale I decided to make this transaction through eBay. I believe this protects both buyer and seller and it’s the right way to do this.
So don’t get me wrong and don’t take it personally but I would prefer to secure the deal through eBay. Also because the car will be shipped from Canada to US I prefer to work with a third party in order to keep the both of us safe in this deal. I will be assured you will buy the car and you will be assured that you will receive it! Basically the money will be sent to them and they will keep the money until you will receive the car and only after you will inspect and drive the car they will forward the money to me.

If you want to find out more details or wish to move forward with this deal please send me your full name and shipping address so I can open a case with ebay and declare you as buyer. As soon as I have your details I will ask ebay to contact you with further information regarding payment and shipping.

    Thank you!
    Veronica M. Llorella

    I then replied~~~

was just curious as to the milage since where I originally on the craigs list dated last wk showed the following:

Great little car with 64,820 miles, auto, cd player, new tires. Daily driver very good on gas light hail damage and scuff on the bumper. call 575-602-9978 $3000.00 or best offer
    this was dated 3/07/2010…
then the email from yourself says :

    Hello there,

Thank you for being interested in buying my 2007 Scion tC, 49,109 miles, automatic transmission, VIN: JTKDE177170187229.
The car It’s in perfect condition without any mechanical problems, with no damages or hidden defects,no need for additional repairs, clear title without any accidents, liens or loans. Dated yesterday, just wondering which milage is correct?

Here’s this scammer’s latest alias and his reply to my inquisition:

Hello and sorry for my delay,
The 2006 Honda Accord EX is in perfect working condition. This detailed vehicle makes the exterior look like it just came off the assembly line. The car has only 45400 original miles. Vin Number : 1HGCM56876A081174, Automatic Trans.

It was never involved in any accident, not even minor ones. The body and paint are great. The interior is super clean, mechanically, it runs like a cat on carpet.

Here are the pics of the car, click on this link :

So if you decide on buying the car, I want the deal closed only through eBay. You will make the payment to eBay and they will hold the money until you receive the car. ONLY AFTER you receive the car and you inspect it, eBay will release the payment to me, in this way we are both protected. I signed up for US military forces and I was sent to United Kingdom with my department to improve the military relations between our country and UK. I am located in London, United Kingdom. One month ago, my wife moved here with me and brought the car with her, but now we have to sell it back in the United States, because we can’t drive it here as we can’t register it; it has US specs and everything, and registering it in Europe will take for ever. My final price on it is US 2,900 $. If you will take it for this price, I am willing to handle the shipping .It will be shipped from here by plane with US Air Military Cargo so it will not cost me anything. I just wanted to toss this out there..these folks are still pulling this little scam… I recantly had the opertunity to be a canidate for one… but being a little weary .. the first thing I did when the person offered the VIN number was I ran a car fax on the vin and it came up to a car that had been reposessed recantly within a few month and there was only about 2 miles on the car from the time it was repoed and the time the person took pictures of it… so I put 2 and 2 together and also contacted EBAY when I received the buyers protection notice of payment request to see if it was valid and they contacted me back and clarified it was not … these are just a few things you can do before you send off your money on a deal that looks just too good to be real…..

    Hello,

Thank you for your interest in my 2003 Honda Accord EX-L. I just moved to Omaha, NE and there are a lot of things that have priority now, so this car has to go. It looks exactly as pictured,no engine problems, damages or hidden defects and hasn’t been involved in any accident. Transmission is automatic, has 80,731 miles and I will agree selling it for $2.300. I am willing to sell it fast, so get back to me only if you’re ready to make this purchase. This is a very well maintained car, clear title no liens, under my name and in hand. Due to the fact that I am very busy with my work I need a fast transaction, and I can`t afford to waste time on advertising the car at the true value. If you’re willing to make this purchase, contact me asap and let’s start the transaction.

    Thank you
    Ashley
