Stephanie, I am glad I could help. You have good intuition! Spread the word to all friends and family: If an internet deal is too good to be true, it probably is!

Note: Craigslist was designed to be a “local” advertising medium. If you cannot meet the seller face-to-face, the likelyhood of losing your hard-earned cash is very great.

I got caught up in the same scam…a John Deere lawn tractor. I sent the requested money through MoneyGram. MoneyGram contacted me back and told me this is a suspected scam and refunded my money. Is there some way to Report this to the proper authorities?

  6. Chief Technical Assistant to the Guru At Large said, on December 18, 2009 at 6:58 pm

Eric, it is certainly a positive sign that MoneyGram is stepping up to the plate on scammers. Yours is the first instance of which I have been made aware where a victim received a refund. This compact John Deere Tractor scam is a mainstay with scammers 😦

To answer your question, unless an individual is actually swindled, law enforcement is virtually powerless to act. There are simply too many of these criminals, the research is time-consuming, and roadblocks pop up everywhere. The scammers are smart enough to move around in order that traceability is difficult. I find that the best approach is for all of us to spread the word (one-on-one, Facebook, ….) to everyone we know that: (1) If the deal seems too good to be true, then it probably is! (2) One should never use an instant money transfer (Moneygram, Western Union) to send money to someone you do not know personally, and (3) we can use more warriors in the battle against this scum. It is not difficult and can be done anonymously from any PC on the planet.

Thanks for your comment. It is my reward for continuing the fight! — Chief

here is what they sent me when I inquired about this tractor:

    From: Barbara Hove
    To: “me”
    Sent: Wednesday, January 13, 2010 4:42 PM
    Subject: RE: your tractor/backhoe

    Hello there,

First of all I want to thank you for your interest in my tractor. The 2004 John Deere 4310 is still available and the price of $4,400.00 includes all the shipping costs and insurance, so you won’t have to pay any extra charges. The tractor has 32hp, 4WD, looks and works like new and it will come with all the attachments and the original manuals. It only has 264 pampered hours on it. I’m selling at a low price because I have opened a farm two years ago in Ocala, FL but it is not working anymore and I decided with my partner to cover some money by selling all the units that we have. The tractor will be shipped from here through Dependable Auto Shippers and it will take around 3-4 working days. The transaction will be done through eBay Purchase Protection Program for our own protection and you have 15 days to inspect the tractor upon arrival with no obligation to buy.
I hope that you will understand my situation. Please get back to me and let me know if you are interested in the purchase.

    Many thanks,
    Barbara Hove

by the way, I saw the ad on craigslist.com eugene oregon; the above is what they wrote back to me when I inquired about it.

  9. Chief said, on January 14, 2010 at 7:55 am

Dave, thanks for posting the text of the email. To discourage the scammer, it would be a good idea to forward the email with headers to abuse@photobucket.com. Photobucket will disable the criminal’s photo album. Sure, he’ll create another one, but it will cost him some time that he will not spend scamming someone else! — Chief

She’s done it again! I got the same e-mail. The ad was posted on craigslist.com in madison, WI. I’m so glad I found this site! It did seem too good to be true.

  11. Chief said, on January 28, 2010 at 10:58 am

Mark, we’re glad you found the site also! Search engines are a wonderful thing — IF the potential victims will use them.

Same scam, John Deere 4310 tractor w/ attachments, worded exactly same as several others, except this farm was supposed to be in Eugene Ore. I got suspicious when tractor was supposed to be in Nixa Mo. and wasn’t, supposedly had to be shipped from Ore. Thought it was too good to be true, and it was. Luckily, I”m not out any money yet. I checked this Barbara Hove out and found out about this scam on google.

Doug, we’re glad you found us! And we’re glad that your intuition was strong enough to dig deeper into this criminal’s deal. — Chief

Vickie, there are no quick, solid solutions for this type of fraud. We would encourage you to report the crime per our hints at this link.

I also inquired about the tractor in the Albany, NY craigslist and got the following response – I specifically asked why they were selling it. I have taken Chief’s suggestion and FWD’ed the email to PhotoBucket. The funny thing is, I’ve moved across the country twice and both times actually used Dependable Auto Shippers. So in case anyone assumes they’re part of this, they’re not.

Evan Koozman hacked into my Craigslist account on 1/7/11 and posted a John Deere tractor for sale, under my account, in Eastern CT; I found out when Craig’s sent me an e-mail saying one of “my” postings was flagged and deleted! Anyone know how he got in there? And why? My email service provider assures me that he did not get into my regular email account (I always ask for replies to the anonymous email address in Craigs or a phone #) as well but I am not so sure. I am now searching all the CT Craigslist listings for his email address and flagging all of his ads. Now we need to get everyone to do it all across the country. Evankoozman@comcast.net. Google the email address and you will see just how sick and persistent this person is. Incredible!

  25. Chief said, on January 10, 2011 at 10:24 pm

    Tracey,
I am guessing that “Evan” used a phishing method to obtain your Craigslist password. It saves the scammer time in establishing his own account.

Here’s another one. The following is the response to an ad I answered that came up in a NJ craigslist. I naturally assumed the machine was here in NJ when I emailed my first response to the ad. Her subsequent story implies that she and her husband had lived in NJ until he died and then she moved to Texas taking his tractor with her. But now she wants to sell it (including free shipping) for about what I think it would cost to transport it from Texas to New Jersey.

    Hi,

First, a few words about this KUBOTA BX22 4WD :
Commercial grade & strong 22 hp 3 cylinder kubota diesel 4×4 hydrostatic drive. Engine starts and runs perfect. All attachments work as they should.
I bought this tractor just the way it is. The backhoe has always been attached to it. It does have the quick attach/detach system.
Great for plumbers, construction, landscaping, home use — Only 500 hrs on it!
If you decide to buy it, you’ll receive all the paperwork, books, owner’s manuals and original purchase order/receipt.
I have a low price ( $ 2,950 including delivery to your home address ) because I want to sell the tractor very quickly. My husband died 3 months ago and I along with my daughter decided to sell the house and we moved to my sister in Texas. Unfortunately I can’t conclude this transaction personally because my work involves a lot of travelling but I left everything prepared for this sale. If you are really interested in purchasing the tractor please contact me asap.
