The ebay these scammers offer is nothing but a fraud. Here’s how to identify an ebay VPP scam.
VPP exists, but only inside of eBay
The eBay Vehicle Protection Program does exist, but it is only available to eBay users on eBay Motors. If you are not placing a bid or using the Buy It Now feature on an eBay site, the VPP does not guarantee your transaction.
eBay does not hold or ship merchandise.
The eBay Vehicle Purchase Protection scam occurs outside of eBay. Scammers assert that eBay is holding or facilitating a sale, and send you fake eBay documents via email to back up their false claims. Here are easy ways to identify this scam:
The eBay VPP scammer:
will not let you buy the item on eBay or eBay Motors
will not have an eBay ID number for the item that you can look up
will not let you see the vehicle prior to sale
will tell you the vehicle will be shipped
will ask that you send money using moneygram or another wire service
will advertise his car outside of eBay on craigslist, kijiji or some other site
I received this reply from a criaglist ad for a pontoon boat. I then notiiced there were several versions of this ad on craigslist from the scammer website. I did give the person my name and address so we could take the deal further. I have not heard back and want to know if this is a scam and what danger am I in by leaving my name and address. See below the reply I received and haven’t heard anything since: Ther persons name is sophie evans.

This class of criminal typically just wants your cash, so your identifying data should cause you no harm. Just tell the criminal that you changed your mind.

I just answered an ad on Craigslist for a Jeep Wrangler – price listed is $2700 – but we know that other exact jeeps are selling for $18,000 – $20,000. The email reply was similar to the one above:

This “fellow” referred to himself as Charles Moran, and even had a “title” scanned in to show me he was for real. I’m usually good at seeing through scams, but not this time. My daughter suggested I google the US Army – Military Auto Transport Dept for POV and sure enough, there are several websites warning about this being a scam!! Thank goodness, we did not send the money!!

I kept thinking this Jeep for $2500 was too good to be true (Clue 1) and I quickly realized I was right. I looked at all the pictures he sent and {deleted so as not to educate the scammers} (Clue 2). Said the Jeep was in Hobbs, NM but the “Scanned Title” was from Mississippi (Clue 3). Jeep wasn’t in Hobbs anymore, now in NY and would ship to me for free!(Clue 4).

MSG Alex Bedner has an ad for toyota camry on craigslist with an identical language as given above. I googled the first thing after getting the email and came across this forum. The ad looks bogus and i thank you all for creating this forum to avoid such fraudulent transactions.

I went to Google checkout to see more about it, and then researched the name of the guy “Alex Bedner”. There really is a guy named Alex Bedner, and graduated with a Master in Music from IU—making the scam even more believable, as the ad was for Indiana! Then, I found your site, and look at all the tweaking scammers have done with these emails…. WOW—I’m gald I kept thinking, “This is just too good to be true…there is something wrong with this…”
Also, it is a shame that the scammers are posing as US Military—that is just wrong…

This means that I do a special training program and I am not allowed to get out of the unit or give calls whenever I want.The car is already at the dep. And the tone of “Tiffany” changed dramatically when we offered sympathy (ha) for the recent death of her son, who was killed by a drunk driver with his fiancee while coming to his younger brother’s birthday party…I will stop there, as the story has been told again, and again.
DAS says they started this scam a year ago, to their knowledge. Here are the emails we received. No money sent, thank goodness. And we did respond to “Tiffany” to say we were no longer interested, but Dateline or 20/20 might be…

The website that they have on the internet to make them look safe and trustworthy was started 2days before I started contact with them. They were advertising these dogs for sale on OODLE Marketplace in Fairhope Alabama. The shipping can’t be a problem because I can do it at no cost for you. You will receive the bobcat along with all the documents including title and the bill of sale .
If you are interested here is how it works:
1. I’ll open a transaction with Google Checkout for you using your delivery details as the buyer of my bobcat. The bobcat is already at the U.S. Army – Military Auto Transport Dept sealed and ready to be delivered.
2. Google Checkout will send you an invoice for payment and delivery details regarding our transaction.
