Hello my name is Noen,
The 2006 Pontoon Boat is still for sale. The pontoon has 4 stroke 2006 Yamaha 90 hp engine, 190 hours; the boat comes with a complete bimini top and a snap on cover. I know it’s really cheap but we need cash money to pay the mortgage on my house and during this financial crisis you can’t sell anything for its real value. Currently I work on a drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico but this has no negative effect for you because the shipping is included in the buy it now price. The pontoon is at the shipping company ready to be sending at your place. The transaction will be made under eBay’s buyer protection plan. This way you can receive assistance for the purchase, title transfer, etc. So, please reply back with your full name and shipping address if you are really interested in purchasing this pontoon so we can start the arrangements!
Thanks.
The last price is $4,800 including shipping and a tandem axel trailer.

She has changed her name to Justin Rees and moved to Kernersville. NC now!
I asked a few questions and now the add on Craigslist has been posted to be removed.
Here are the two emails I received in response to my email about the boat.
    1st email……..

    Hi I’m Justin;
The 2006 Pontoon Boat Sweetwater 2386 90 hp Yamaha Clean is still for sale. 4 stroke, hull material: aluminum, engine model: 90 HP. My final price is $4,900 trailer included. I know it’s really cheap but we need cash money to pay the mortgage on my house and during this financial crisis you can’t sell anything for its real value, so let me to know if you are still interested.
I will put the boat on eBay at $4,900 buy it now! That way you will receive assistance for the purchase, paperwork, title transfer.

    Second email……………
    Hi again,
The boat is already at a shipping company. I took the boat to them to be able to ship it to a potential buyer whilst I’m out of town, working on a drilling rig in the Gulf of Mexico. My brother in law works at this small shipping company, and he promised me that it will cost me or you nothing to ship it in the ground us. Like I told you in first e-mail the boat is listed on eBay and that lets me use their secured system. I’m very busy with my job and I’m sorry I can’t meet you in person. According to eBay you have 5 days from the time you receive the boat to inspect it and decide if you want to keep it or not.
So if you really want it I will give you directions/link to the auction on eBay motors because this is the only way that I’m going to sell this boat.
Mail me ASAP if you are still very interested in my boat because now I have more buyers still interested.

    I;d like to kick somebody’s A–!

    The third email response………….

Click or copy and paste below link into your browser to be redirected on eBay auction: http://tnij.com/boat2006 and click Buy It Now and after you complete the payment to eBay agent let me to know your full name and full shipping address to send my boat. After you get the boat you have 5 days to test and if you decide to keep it eBay will release money to me if NOT they will refund your payment and the shipping company will take the boat back on my expense and keep it until I find a new buyer.
    Thanks

How do they make money off this scam?
    What’s the point?

Robert, thanks for posting the text of the emails. You’ll save someone some hard-earned money! — Chief

  5. Chief said, on February 24, 2010 at 6:58 am

Robert, the scammers have no boat. The ebay site you saw is a fraudulent site — not an authentic Ebay site. Once you send money to these criminals, they disappear — along with your money. Thanks for dropping in. — Chief

Here is the same scam again but with a different boat and another name, and now he’s in Montana!

    Hi,
The boat is still for sale and is in mint condition. If you’d like to view some additional pictures here is a link: http://picasaweb.google.com/117822889730652906504/2005BenningtonPontoon25Foot?feat=directlink. It is in very good condition inside and out, and everything runs great. The interior is in very good condition. The seats have no holes, cuts, or tears. Boat has 450 hours on it and was always serviced at the dealer where we bought it from brand new. The trailer was bought brand new in 2005 along with the boat and is also in mint condition. It is a heavy duty tandem axle trailer with brakes and has a max load capacity of 5000lbs. Trailer has 13″ tires which were also replaced last spring.

I was recently promoted so we had to move to Montana. Besides, there are lot of things which have priority now, so this boat has to go. As you probably noticed, the price is rather low $4,900 for you if you will buy it today or tomorrow. Due to the fact I am very busy with my work and I don’t stay too much at home, the boat is already to the shipping company and will be delivered from there very fast, shipping costs are included in the price. The transaction will be made under eBay’s buyer protection plan. This way you can receive assistance for the purchase, title transfer, etc. So please reply back with your full name and shipping address if you are really interested in purchasing this boat and we can start the arrangements!
    Thanks
    Shane.

Steve, we “flagged” about 20 of those craigslist ads for this pontoon boat yesterday. Keep educating those around you. If we reduce the demand for these deals, the criminals will have no customers.

  10. Chief said, on February 26, 2010 at 8:01 am

Yes, Barbara, the scammers had ads in about two dozen locales across the US. Remember to flag these when you see them to protect those who are not quite as sharp as you. :) — Chief

2006 Pontoon Boat Sweetwater 2386 is advertised on Atlanta Craigslist. Same photo and info. on boat. Listed from two different cities in Atlanta area in last two days. It give the same person to email. I sent an email to have them contact me to see boat. I’m sure I won’t get a call. Thanks for the heads up.

Alec, thanks for commenting. I flagged a couple dozen more today … it was posted from South Carolina to New York to California. I’ll bet you lunch that the scammer will email you asking for your address so his “eBay” can set up the sale. — Chief

Here is a copy of the e-mail reply I got a couple of hours ago to my earler e-mail requesting to view this boat that was supposedly be in Ellenwwod,GA. I had asked for Justin to call me to schedule a time to look at the boat:

If I was a betting man I would bet that I won’t get a phone call to see the boat.

  18. Chief said, on March 3, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Alec, agreed. He will not call. If you are using false information with the scammer, continue to correspond with him. Do not follow any fake ebay links from your home. The scammer can detect your IP address. I would be comfortable clicking the fake ebay links from a place of employment (such as the one from where you posted your earlier comment). Any fake ebay sites can be reported to the fake site’s registrar and web host. Unsure? Just ask and I’ll reply via email.

    Thanks for your involvement.

  20. Kathy Mc said, on April 16, 2010 at 12:02 am

I have never seen so many overposts on Craigslist for pontoon boats. These stories sound so familiar. My solution is to continue flagging them so no one else falls for their scams. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. They take pictures of sold boats on ebay and use those pictures for their Craigslist postings. They don’t even own the boat! The relative who works for the shipping company (probably is no such person) and the boat owner who works on a drilling rig should be apprehended. Good Luck!

  21. Chief said, on April 16, 2010 at 7:31 am

Kathy, thanks for commenting. You are right on target. Flagging is helpful. Understanding that “when a deal is ‘too good to be true’, it probably is” is certainly paramount. The offshore drilling story is not one I have seen very often — usually it is a serviceman overseas or a cruise ship worker. At any rate, if you will put the text of the email in a comment here, it will help future potential victims to avoid being burned.

We challenge you to tell everyone you know about the tactics of these criminals. Education is a good way to prevent this fraud. — Chief

It has 130 hours and 90 hp, four stroke, there are NO problems and come with a two years transferable warranty. Also I’m not interested in any kind of trade and the last price is 4,800 dollars with trailer included. The reasons of this sale are financial problems!

Jayci, we’re glad you had the intuition to check the deal out prior to sending money to the scammer. As you can see, if one does not investigate the “seller’s” story, it would be quite easy for anyone to pose as the owner of a vehicle and trick a buyer. Be sure to tell all your friends and family how these criminals do business. We want no one else to be burned by these shysters. — Chief

Now finding out I got scammed, I fell like an idiot. Goodbye $2400. Please tell me that someone has been able to do something to get back at these people. I want some blood. How can these sites allow this to go on when obviously it has been going on for quite a while now. Does anyone have any feed back other than welcome to the club?

Sir, you have nothing to be ashamed of. These criminals are shrewd professionals and prey on the open honesty of our culture. I encourage you to report any and everything you can to the FTC and Internet Crime Center .. links here – http://scammerdatabase.wordpress.com/faqs/i-have-been-scammed-what-do-i-do/ .

Most of these guys hide behind international smoke screens and reside in Eastern Europe. Some action is taking place to apprehend these guys [ http://scammerdatabase.wordpress.com/2010/04/07/bad-news-for-scammers-good-news-for-buyers/ ] but the volume of scams tells me there are hundreds of these guys out there.

his first one was like all the others above….here is an email from a diff pontoon boat but a guy with the similar story:

    Hi,

Thank you for your interest in my boat. This is a 1991 Sun Tracker PARTY HUT PONTOON
Condition: Used ,Type: Pontoon, Engine type: Single outboard Use: Fresh water
Length (feet): 30.0,Engine make: Johnson Primary, fuel type: Gas
Beam (feet): 8.0 ,Engine model: 115 hp, Fuel capacity (gallons): 51-75
    Hull material: Aluminum ,Trailer: Included

Here you can find more pictures of the boat: http://s880.photobucket.com/albums/ac8/ponton123/

(if the above link does not work copy and paste it into a new web browser window).
The boat has been well taken boat of, always kept in the garage.Flawless exterior/interior condition,no scratches and no dents. It has never been involved in an accident. The engine starts and drives like new and the paint looks great. It comes with US clear title which will be signed and notorized in the buyer’s name.Have original manuals and all keys.
I’m an US Air Force Sgt. currently stationed in Hawaii. The boat is here with me.The boat is for sale locally as well, but there are slim chances of this to happen. In order to be able to register this boat here in Hawaii the buyer would have to pay very high taxes that will double the price.
The price is $4,900.00 including shipping from Hawaii and delivery to your home address. So if you decide to buy this boat or need further information please get back to me as soon as possible.

    Thank you

    Sgt. Dyane Huston

and a second with the ebay scam:

    Hi,

The reason I’m selling this vehicle way below market value, is because I would like to help ease the burden of my sisters medical expenses, which she has acquired do to a serious illness.

I will have the boat shipped from Hawaii by an US Air Force boatgo plane so there won’t be any additional shipping costs. Also I will arrange for a truck to transport the boat to your home address or, if you like, you can pick it up from the nearest airport in your area. The shipping will take 3-5 days, depending on your location.Shipping will be door to door,to your home address, somebody must be home when the boat arrives to sign for the reception. The boat will arrive with all the papers and documents required for registration and the keys. The clear title and the bill of sale will be already signed by me.

The payment will be done through eBay.You will send the money to eBay and as soon as the payment is confirmed they will notify me to proceed with the shipping. I will ship the boat, you will receive it and you will have 5 days for inspection, both the boat and the paperwork and the option to accept or reject the boat. The inspection time period will begin as soon as you sign for receiving the boat at your requested address.During all this time eBay will hold the money into a trust account. So, this is not a blind transaction, you can see the boat before decided to buy it.If you are satisfied with the boat and decide to keep it you inform eBay about this and they will release the money to me. If the boat is not as advertised and decide not to keep it eBay will refund you the money, no questions asked, and shipping back the boat will be my concern. I think this is more than fair for the both of us.Please take into consideration that I will get paid only after you receive the boat and make sure everything is as agreed.

If you agree with these terms and you have the money, send me your full name and the address where you want the boat to be delivered to and I will initiate the transaction with eBay. You will receive all the transaction details from them.I will appreciate an answer as soon as possible.

    Thank you

PLEASE BEWARE OF THESE IDIOTS….THEIR SOB STORIES ARE ALL LIES

Here’s one that showed up listed in Meridian Mississippi and being curious I sent the poster a email. I also googled the post and found it listed for Kansas craigs list but it was removed. Here’s the reply from the poster

My name is William and I live in Manistee, MI.The pontoon boat is here. The pontoon is 2006 Sweetwar Pontoon boat and the model is 2186F fishing boat.It has low hours on it, it come with the Suzuki 70 HP four stroke witch starts at the turn of the key,is equipped with tilt and trim and aluminum propeller. The pontoon boat is equipped with ,new depth finder and live well that never been used,I have added 4th swivel fishing seat on the rear of this boat.So you have 4 swivel seats, one on each corner with rod holders,*AM/FM/CD* player crusing light, halogen headlights that will sure light up the water at night.A4 cup holder table that is removable, there is ropes, bumberg guards, and life jackets included.I paid extra for the galvanized tandem trailer. The boat is ready for lake.I signed an agreement with ebay and I will sell the boat through Ebay Buyer Protection Program so we can both be PROTECTED.A friend of mine works at a shipping company and he can ship the pontoon for FREE for me.This is a regretful sale but unfortunately i need money for my son , he is in hospital and i really need money for him. That is why the price is so low, only $4300 If you want to buy the boat please reply so we can talk business.
Specs: Length: 21.” Beam: 8‘6, Weight: AROUND 2,500 lbs. with the trailer, Capacity: 10 People or 1,395 LBS If you need more pics just ask.

This prick is still at it (and using the name Sgt. Dyane Huston, Air Force). When I was doing some mass-listing reporting last night I came across one of their listings with another picture on it. It was pictured of knock-off/counterfeit shoes, purses, etc. The site went back to a crappy online store located in Greece (www.uslikeshop.com). No wonder that country is in financial turmoil. Second only to Nigeria. Just for using the military in this scam makes me want to beat the shit out of him wherever he is.

Here’s the text I got back:

Beautiful 1991 Suntracker 30′ Party Hut. Really very nice! This has been our “Go To” boat for family fun. She is equipped with an oil-injected 115hp Johnson outboard, and a Tracker Marine Trailer with surge brakes.
This is such a great boat….from candlelight dinners in a quiet cove, to week-long camping trips….this boat offers something for everyone! There are sleeping accomodations for 4 adults….a very comfortable king size bed in the front, and a large “double” in the back. The dinette converts to a bed for 2 children. And there is ample room for sleeping bags, etc. on both decks. Our grandkids love to pitch a tent on the upper deck, while us “oldsters” prefer the comfort and quiet below.
This is such a fun boat! We call it our “Family Fun Center”. My wife and I often take her out after work…..swimming and fishing, having a romantic dinner, and sleeping under the stars. Wake up to fresh coffee and a big breakfast. Such a great way to start the morning!

since i like to do research on ad titles, such as this one, i’m glad to be paranoid. Funny how WE have to go to so much trouble to flag these listings when CL is sitting on MILLIONS of dollars in income! You’re telling me that they can’t code their system to locate IDENTICAL ads and automatically flag them? Or how about this: people who reply to a listing have to use that “ReCaptcha” feature (you type in the 2 words)! This would stop 95% of the spam, but CL won’t do it!

CL has a lot of responsibility in these scams. They have the ability to code to locate them and to prevent the masses of spam, but they don’t.

Until CL takes action, these scams will continue and people will get burned. Meanwhile, Craig pockets thousands of dollars a day. What does he care???

  60. Dan said, on July 9, 2010 at 8:57 pm

Found it here for Wichita, KS from the following email jasonssmith178@msn.com like others have mentioned to bad CL could not better control this. Just remeber if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. Also E-Bay does not let others use the VPP Vehicle Protection Program unless sold on E-Bay

  61. Chief said, on July 9, 2010 at 9:22 pm

Dan, you are right on target on every count. Craigslist is slothful in its actions to kill scammers’ ads.

My final asking price is $4.900. I already has lots of emails so I hope you understand that I need to sort them out. I will take in consideration only those who are really interested in buying the boat, to be sure that I don’t waste my time with endless discussions, losing money and time in the process. This way, I shall be assured of the serious intentions.

    Thanks.

    – I will list the boat on ebay-motors at the buy it now price of $4,900 so you can purchase it there. That way you will receive assistance for the purchase, paperwork, title transfer and an extended warranty, knowing . Also they are guaranteeing purchases up to $ 50.000 , that is great I really love, I will need a quick response. ”

and one from a different email they had:

The pontoon is in very good condition, rust free, well maintained and
the engine runs as new. The interior has no holes, cuts, or tears. The

is already at the shipping company and will be delivered from there
very fast, shipping costs is included in the price. The transaction

    Hello,
The following is a response I got to an ad posted on CraigsList before I saw this website. Strange how they say the buyer
deleted — we don’t want to educate the scammers, now, do we? :) .

The 2006 Pontoon Boat is still for sale and it is as good as it looks. I included in sale: a complete bimini top and a snap on cover and tandem axel trailer. The engine is Yamaha 4 stroke and has 90 HP and 186 hours. I have decided to sell it for $4,800 and the buyer will receive it with all papers and receipts that he needs to register it so if you buy it you don’t have to worry about the paperwork.
Please get back to me only if you are serious and want to buy.
    Thanks

Thanks for the data, Nancy. If you are playing along with the scammer, please do so safely. If the scammer sends additional info (fake ebay email addresses or phone numbers), please post them in another comment. As you have discovered, having the right search data here for the search engines to find us helps potential future victims from being duped.

Regarding the verbiage scammers use …. most of it is just filler to lend an air of authenticity. Their emails are all lies. Many of them do not even use English, so they do not know what they are emailing. It is just a script they follow.

If you have time, here is a complete example of how the scam works and then here is an excellent article that describes why these guys are difficult to catch.

Who I am is really not that important. I’m just a guy who cares. :) Your comments are what keeps me motivated to continue this work.

    – never left in the water for a extended period of time, the interior is in good, clean condition;
    – ultra low hours, less than 80, the engine is a fuel injected Honda 75hp, four stroke, four cylinder;
    – it has nice features including: full snap on cover, bimini top with boot, carpet, full gauges, power tilt/trim, jensen marine cd player, tanning deck, docking lights, reboarding ladder, and ample seating and storage;
    – the trailer is included.
If you decide to buy it, you’ll receive all the papers, owner manual, keys, a buy-sell contract already signed by me and the clear title.

    Hi,
The package (2006 Pontoon Boat Sweetwater 2386, 4 stroke/ 90 HP Yamaha engine and trailer)
is still for sale and my final price is $4800. It only has about 147 hrs. on it. It has no damage and the motor
runs like new. It has just been serviced by a local Yamaha dealer. Also comes with a complete bimini top and a
snap on cover and a tandem axel trailer. The seats are in good condition they are clean with no rips or tears and
all components are in working order. All others extras such as boat cover, motor cover, life jackets, anchors,
ropes, float etc. are included in my final price. This package will come with clear titles for both boat and
trailer. My husband was recently promoted so we had to move to Winfield, TN. Besides, there are a lot of things
which have priority now, so this package has to go. As you probably noticed, the price is rather low $4800 due to
the fact that I’m very busy with my work and I don’t stay too much at home, the boat is already at the shipping
company and will be delivered with “express delivery”, shipping costs are included in price. The transaction will
be made under eBay’s buyer protection plan. This way we can receive assistance for purchase, title transfer, etc.

So, please reply back with your full name, shipping address and cell phone number if you are really interested
in purchasing this package so we can start the arrangements!
If you’d like to view some additional pictures please let me know.

    Thanks,

I really enjoyed reading this article. I’m actually committing Sin #2 ‘Waiting too long to comment’! However, I felt compelled to express appreciation, since I think many of these you enumerate are unconscious mistakes that can easily be rectified.

  80. BTW, are you doing the Las vegas Marathon in December? I posted discount codes good through July 16 at my blog.

We have received this email as well for a boat listed in Southeast Missouri on Craigslist. The Google Checkout page seems legit but we weren’t sure about it. When we read some of the other postings, it was clear that this may be the same person.

Hi, I am sorry for the delay in my answer but I have been very busy these days.
I sell this very nice 2007 Sun Cruiser 22′ pontoon with the 90HP 4Stroke Mercury Motor and trailer! This is a 1-Owner fresh water pontoon. The boat was just serviced by a Mercury dealer and has no known problems or concerns. It has a Bimini top with cover, CD player with 4 speakers, navigation lights, courtesy lights, L-Shape lounge seating and full Snap-on canvas cover. It also has some special features like Captains deluxe helm chair, over-sized stern sundeck cushioned tanning pad w/privacy enclosure, padded armrest w/drink holder and under-seat storage. All others extras such as boat cover, motor cover, life jackets, anchors, ropes, float etc. are included in my final price. I’m not interested in any kind of trade. If you’d like to view some additional pictures here is a link: http://imgur.com/a/9A0dc
This package will come with clear titles for both boat and trailer. I was recently promoted so we had to move to Pittsburgh, PA. Besides, there are a lot of things which have priority now, so this package has to go. As you probably noticed, the price is rather low $5500 due to the fact that I’m very busy with my work and I don’t stay too much at home, the boat is already at the shipping company and will be delivered with “express delivery”, shipping costs are included in price. The transaction will be made under Google Checkout plan. This way we can receive assistance for purchase, title transfer, etc.

So, please reply back to this email if you are really interested in purchasing my pontoon boat and trailer and I will provide further instructions regarding payment and delivery.
    Many thanks,

    Hi again,
As we speak the package is already at the shipping company here in Pittsburgh, PA ready to be shipped. I am located out of the city due to occupational obligations so unfortunately this means we can only make the deal through Google Checkout . Since, I presume, you are not familiar with Google’s Checkout Plan, I have briefly described Google Transaction steps below:
    – Bellow you will find the link to the private Google Checkout page.
    – You need to complete your full name, shipping address and email address in order to commit to buy;
    – Then Google Checkout will sends you the invoice with payment details for our transaction;
    – You will receive all the details that you need to complete this transaction safe and easy;
    – After Google Checkout secure the payment, they will notify me and I will start shipping. Shipping will take no more than 3 to 5 days (depending on your location).
    – When the shipping process starts you will receive a tracking number so you can track the package whenever you want.
    – After you receive the pontoon you will have another 5 days to inspect it.
    – When the inspection period ends, Google Checkout contacts you and if there are any issues with the boat, they will fully refund you within 3 business days and the boat will be shipped back on my expense. If all is good with the package, which I’m sure it will be, they will assist you with the titles transfer and release the payment to me.
As you can see, you will receive the pontoon and trailer BEFORE any money will be released to me. You’ll get the chance to inspect, test and everything you like while your money are still safely held in Google Checkout trust account.
I apologize if it seems like I’m pushing on this deal but I really want to be sure that everything is clarified.
I am looking forward to hearing from you.

Hello, the 2006 Pontoon Boat Sweetwater 2386 is still for sale and my final price is $4,000.

Trailer boat will come with clear title and all papers, receipts that you need to register it on your name.
My wife was recently promoted so we had to move to Houston, Texas.
Besides, there are a lot of things which have priority now, so this boat has
to go. As you probably noticed, the price is rather low $4,000. Due to the fact
that I’m very busy with my work and I don’t stay too much at home, the boat and trailer

The boat and trailer are already at the shipping company here in Houston, Texas ready for delivery.

I am located out of the city due to occupational obligations so unfortunately this means we can
only make the deal through Google Checkout buyer protection plan. Since I presume you are not familiar with Google Checkout Buyer Protection Program, I have described it step by step:

    1. Buyer, seller reaches an agreement (price and delivery conditions)
    2. Buyer sends 50% down payment from total price to Google Checkout.
    3. Google Checkout confirms to seller that the amount has been received.
    4. Seller performs the required services (shipping, insurance).
    5. Buyer accepts delivery and informs Google Checkout about the acceptance and sends the balance payment $2,000.
    6. Google Checkout releases the money to seller.

As you can see, you will receive the boat trailer BEFORE any money will be released to
me. You’ll get the chance to inspect it, test it and everything you
like while your money are still safely held in Google Checkout trust account. ONLY after you
confirm to Google Checkout that you agree with the boat and trailer, they will release the money to me.

If, for some reason, you disagree with the boat or trailer (I assure you that is NOT
going to happen since the boat and trailer looks like I described in the listing and photos
are real and recently taken) it will be shipped back to me on my expense and Google Checkout will
    full refund your money back.

If you wish to proceed further, I will need your full name, shipping address and cell phone no.
so I can start the transaction with Google Checkout Buyer Protection Program
